This film is a touching subject that is often overlooked or spoke upon in such a negative light that it is almost taboo. We expose all the good, the bad & the ugly of this huge epidemic.
In a state of crisis with a 72% of African American households being a single mother raising children is very unacceptable. This is a generational issue that has spanned all the way back to the state when African Americans were taken from their home unwillingly, placed into enslavement, tortured, beaten, slain, made to live in unthinkable conditions, stripped of their spouses, children and families, sold off to never see or hear from their family or loved ones ever again. Given the lifestyles, traditions & conditions that plagued the African American community and lives during slavery have tremendously effected the way of life going into the future to produce a healthy and productive family life.
Every child has a father but not every child has a father consistently in his life. This state of fatherlessness has a psychological effect on young people as they grow up and form their own identities. The aftermath of being raised without a dad can continue into adult development as well. Certainly, having a dad in your life doesn't guarantee emotional wellness, just as not having one doesn't doom you to psychological problems. However, fatherlessness can certainly have noticeable effects. Studies show that children without active relationships with their fathers struggle with acting out behaviorally, such as in defiance and rebellion.
These behaviors extend beyond a child's normal challenge against authority. Fatherless children may experience frustrations about their life situations that manifest in disruptive actions.
Depression, and subsequently suicide, are unfortunate psychological effects of dealing with an absent father from a child's life. Children must learn to cope with the sadness of an absent father. They may be depressed and feel that, not only is the parent directly rejecting them by his absence, because it sometimes gives them a sense that they are unlovable. Statistics show children in this position are also 4.6 times more likely to choose suicide over those with both parents in their life.
Due to various behavioral problems, fatherless children may have a hard time interacting socially with their peers because of their more disruptive actions. Children with these challenges may then separate themselves because they don't fit in as well and this isolation further exacerbates behavioral issues. Specifically, children may have trouble connecting with others on an emotional level because this was lacking in the relationship with a key parent.
As a young girl grows up, the fatherless daughter is more likely to tolerate abusive behavior from others. She may develop a feeling that she lacks control of situations in her life and eventually develop a victim mentality. She may also feel she doesn't deserve to be treated well because she felt mistreated, neglected or unloved by her father.
A common psychological affect of fatherlessness is feeling angry. Typically, at the core of anger is hurt and pain which stems from the rejection felt from their parent. Anger manifests itself in various forms such as verbal outbursts, cutting themselves and even physical violence.
Our nation is facing a crisis of fatherlessness 41% of our nation’s children grow up in homes without fathers. 72.3% of African American children are living fatherless. This has become so prevalent in African American homes across America now with being double any other race in America.
Social science proves, time and time again, the crucial nature of intact two-parent married homes. Children are and feel protected and are given the best opportunities of emotional, spiritual and academic development in a stable marital environment. Today’s popular culture would like to think that family can be defined in any way, but there are clear differences in outcomes for & on the children effected by a fatherless home. We don’t disparage single parents, especially those who do all they can to provide for their children on every level, but we highlight the ideal–the model that brings the most benefit to our children and to our society is a healthy two parent loving home. So in an effort to recover from this crisis and epidemic that has plagued so many African American homes is to become educated of all the facts & be open for change.
